Investment in crowdsourcing startups topped USD280m in 2011

VC investments in crowdsourcing startups topped USD280m in 2011, according to a new report from research firm Massolution. The total figure covers 35 crowdsourcing startups, equating to USD8m per funding round, with companies raising USD52.8m in December alone, according to Massolution, indicating that investor interest is ramping up. Some USD118.6m, or more than half of the capital ploughed into startups, were Series A rounds, highlighting the relative immaturity of the space. However, the largest investment of the year went to real-time traffic services firm Inrix, which raised a USD27m Series D round in July, followed by crowd-sourced design marketplace 99Design’s Accel-led USD35m Series A in April.
